Kusano is one of the protagonists of the story and Minato's second Sekirei.

About Kusano[]

She is commonly referred to as 'Kū-chan', "Green Girl" or "Green Lady". Her "regulations" (regulator Sahashi Takami) are still incomplete and her powers are uncontrollable, which is why her powers tend to go out of control and causes the plants around her to grow when she's sad or upset. This causes her to be trapped in the botanical garden after an attempted winging of her by Mikogami Hayato with #43 Yomi on his side[1]. She calls Minato, Onii-chan (older brother), and is the most attached to him. She does not like fighting or quarreling and she can be seen stopping them when they start[2]. She's influenced and sometimes copies Musubi, Tsukiumi and Kazehana's actions. She has expressed a desire to be Minato's wife when she grows up (a wish that is not reciprocated by Minato and most likely never will be since, unlike his other Sekirei, Minato does not see Kusano as a love interest/wife, only as a little sister). [3] Her name (kusa+no) literally means a "grass field". Her power can be difficult to control because of her age and because her adjustment wasn't finalized. She has a very close sibling-like relationship with #107 Shiina, despite the fact that his power is naturally opposite of hers[4]. In the manga, when Minato initially brought her to Izumo Inn, Asama Miya drew and pointed a sword at Minato's face, as she thought that Minato had kidnapped her[5]. Miya's nickname for Kusano is "Adopted Child".

Appearance[]

Kusano is the smallest and youngest Sekirei in Minato's group. Her appearance remains the same throughout the entire story except that she wore a ribbon in her hair when she first appeared.[6] She has yellow hair, wears a one piece with a ribbon on the back and often tries out a costume from Uzume's collection in order to show it to Minato. While at the beach or washing with a hose she wears a dark blue one piece swimsuit with number 108 on the front. She is also seen in a green nightgown or an orange pajama while in bed.

Personality[]

Kusano has the personality of a little kid. She cries easily and hates it when people fight. This fear of people fighting has broken up a couple fights before[2], making her one of two people to break up fights in Izumo Inn, the other being Miya. However, she is rarely (if ever) bratty and mostly acts like a typical, cheerful, innocent girl, and along with Musubi is one of Minato's more pure and happy-go-lucky Sekirei. She usually carries a potted plant or seeds around so that she can use her abilities anywhere she goes[7][8].

Kusano is also shown to hate being alone, as after being separated from Takami, she cried and begged for someone to help her before being saved by Minato, Musubi and Seo. She is very close with No. 107 Shiina, because his power of decay is what used to stop her plant powers from going out of control[4]. Because of this, she misses him dearly and wishes to be reunited with him.

Kusano, like all of Minato's other Sekirei, is very fond of him, and calls him her Onii-chan (Big Brother). She is very determined to be his wife when she gets older and can be quite clingy, though this only really started once Tsukiumi started declaring herself as Minato's wife. She is also violently protective of him, and is prone to biting Seo whenever she suspects he might be bullying Minato. She can be very possessive of Minato at times, even biting her fellow Sekirei when they start to get too close to him [9], and on occasion Minato himself when she thinks he is paying more attention to one of his five other Sekirei, although this is played off as comical and is not done with intent to hurt anyone.

Another interesting thing about Kusano is her emotional intelligence, which is high for her age. She is the one who convinces Tsukiumi to go help Minato when he is fighting the Disciplinary Squad on the bridge by stating that "she is not Minato's wife, even if she wants to be, if she doesn't even support him when he truly believes in something"[10]. She is also very impressionable and often copies Musubi, Tsukiumi and Kazehana's mannerisms.

Abilities and Powers[]

Sekirei-03 20

Kusano chooses her Ashikabi and gets winged

Kusano has the power to control plants, she's able to make them grow at accelerated rates and to unnaturally large proportions; she uses the plants to trap or disable her opponents without hurting them. She has also used her powers to hide herself in a large forest she created. She is often seen carrying a potted plant so that she is able to use her powers at places without plants nearby. She's also able control plants while they're still in their seed form[8]. She is also able to communicate with plants, even over a distance. She was able to "ask" a tree to catch Minato, and learned from it about Shiina being released from the labs.

Ku-Shiina-tuning-theory

Matsu speaks about Takehito and Mutsu's Norito Forecast in a secret meeting.

Asama Takehito hypothesized before his death that Kusano actually held the mirror ability to Shiina and not just limited to plant life[11]. During a battle of Stage 4 on Kamikura Island when Sahashi Minato activates Kusano's norito a number of Sekirei believed to be terminated recover including newly Winged Akitsu [12].

Matsu hypothesizes that any sekirei, who hasn't been terminated long could, with the assistance of "stimulation" such as Kusano's norito can be used to reactivate a sekirei. This includes traditionally terminated, and other sekirei who had been "frozen". Matsu further states in theory, that it could be directed and controlled.

Kusano herself states she could hear the whispering voices of "everyone who was sleeping". Displaying an level of understanding of who had been revived. Unfortunately it also appeared to affect the invading soldiers[13].

It is also stated, or reflected on that it might have been usable on Uzume. This left the impression it was/is far too late for that instance.

Norito[]

Further information: Norito
NoritoKusano

Executing Norito.

Norito is a procedure winged Sekirei can use to use a large amount of power. Every Sekirei is said to have one. The form to execute it requires two steps:

  1. A kiss with their Ashikabi.
  2. A prayer.

It is yet unknown if there are different types of Noritos Sekireis can perform or if each Sekirei has more than one Norito. Kusano currently only has one known Norito:

  • Prayer: "Life of my Pledge, Shine on my Ashikabi!"
  • Sakameka-san (Earth Mother): Effects seem to be a wave of growth in life, and probably rebirth/rejuvenation to those within the radius of its effect. Sekirei believed to be terminated revived shortly after Kusano utilized this[12].

History[]

Kusanofirsttimeout

Takami shows Kusano the outside world for the first time.

Not much is known about Kusano's earlier life, except that her tuner was Takami and she lived in a laboratory; a place she wasn't very fond of. It is known, however, that Sahashi Takami took Kusano outside once to see the outside world. As they were about to turn back, Mikogami Hayato and his Sekirei Yomi attacked Kusano. Takami was injured while protecting her and still has the scar over her eye from the incident. Because Kusano felt guilty about Takami being injured and was afraid of Mikogami, Kusano's powers went out of control and created the Botanical Garden Plant Barrier[1]. Shortly after, she made telepathic contact with Minato who came to her rescue, with Musubi and Homura protecting them both from Yomi and Mikogami.

Synopsis[]

Ku first appears to Minato via telepathic contact, established through Minato touching a tree in Izumo Inn's back garden. She begs for help, but is interrupted by Uzume and Musubi's "fight."[6] After reestablishing contact, a frantic Ku is comforted by Minato and tells him her name. Ku also explains that she's in trouble because of her desire to go outside, going against the wishes of Takami (later clarified to be Takami Sahashi, Minato's mother), and getting her hurt because of a woman wielding a scythe.[14] After Minato acquires Seo, Hikari, and Hibiki's help in getting past the MBI grunts guarding the arboretum where Ku is located, Ku begins guiding Minato towards her location.[15] Ku is later located by Yomi (the scythe wielder mentioned by Ku previously) sent on orders of Hayato Mikogami to capture Ku in order to ensure that he is the one to wing her.[1] While Musubi arrives in time to confront Yomi, Minato holds Ku as she collapses.[16]

Ku is eventually brought back to the Inn, safe and sound, where she gladly eats a generous portion of Miya's cooking. [5] After napping, Ku meets Minato on the back step and wings herself to him. [5] The next day, Ku dresses up as a wagtail upon Uzume's suggestion, accompanying Musubi, who is wearing a maid's attire, reacting happily to Minato's compliment.[17] She eventually confides in Minato about missing Shiina, a male Sekirei she sees as a brother.[18] Minato assures her that they'll find him and that he'll ensure that Ku never has to be alone like she was before. Much to her discomfort, Ku encounters Matsu in the middle of the night, confusing her for a ghost.[19]

Ku is present when in Matsu's room when Matsu and Minato discuss Tsukiumi.[7] When Minato locates Tsukiumi, Ku is accompanying him, sparking a misunderstanding on Tsukiumi's part about the manner of relationship that Ku and Minato have.[2] She uses her powers to attempt to break up the fighting, to limited success. She responds with clingy jealousy when Tsukiumi insists that she is Minato's only legal/real wife.[20] Ku reacts with rampant enthusiasm when Tsukiumi and Musubi declare an interest in tracking down a Sekirei that has broken the rule related to accompanying a terminated Sekirei's body, much to Minato's chagrin.[21]

Ku participates in the 'going away party' held for Haruka and Kuno before the escape attempt, and later dress down Tsukiumi for her refusal to help aid the pair, even at Minato's behest. Much to Ku's delight, this spurs Tsukiumi into going out to help.[22]

Ku cheerfully greets Minato when he is released from the hospital in the wake of the injuries he sustained during the escape. [23]

Ku appeals to Minato to aid Homura by comparing their situations, and wondering if "Kagari-san" is crying.[24] She later restrains Kakizaki during Minato and Higa's Sekirei confornting each other and coming to blows. [25]

During Matsu and Miya's explanation of the Sekirei and Ashikabi's origins, Ku is present.[26]

Ku accompanies Minato the Fourth Match of the Third Stage on board the Minaka.[27] Ku reacts with anger when Seo appears to be "bullying" (strong-arming) Minato into following the plan he had set out for himself, Minato, and Sanada for the match, which Seo doesn't appear to register.[28] Ku happily searches the ship for a Jinki with Minato while likening the match to a game of tag.[29] Ku and Minato are later bailed out of a compromising situation by Kaho and Oosumi Orihiko, with Kaho defeating the opponents that sought to eliminate the two.[30]

Ku is soon after able to sense Shiina's presence aboard the boat. They are reunited after Kusano falls into Shiina's arms. A comedic scene plays out in which Ku is angered by Yukari's insistence that something's wrong with Minato for winging such a young Sekirei, after which the match ends.[31]

After the duo return home, Ku draws her "Sekirei Declaration" to Minato on paper, but passes out before she can present it to him, she later clings onto Minato in her sleep, after which he gently takes her into a meeting with Seo without waking her. [32]

During the Fourth Stage, Ku arrives on Kamikura Island alongside Minato's other five Sekirei and the man himself, later accompanying Minato, Homura, and Kazehana in their Jinki-related troubles.[33]

During an impromptu strategy meeting between the Ashikabi in the wake of another invasion of Kamikura, Matsu interrupts, saying this is the time for Ku to unleash her Norito; she believes that Kusano's power being paired with Shiina's means it is likely she can affect matter apart from vegetation just as Shiina can. Kusano is willing to try and Minato agrees. [11] Minato then asks Ku to perform her Norito, and she enthusiastically does so. Kuu releases her power; plants spring to life across the island, and the surge of power suffuses the fallen Sekirei. In a bed of vegetation, the Norito is revealed to have revived Akitsu, amongst other recently terminated Sekirei.[12]

Ku later (following some more fighting and Musubi terminating Karasuba) entrusts Musubi with using some of her power (along with the others) to revive Minato, after which Musubi and Minato defeat Miya on Kouten.[34] The Sekirei then catch Minato when he falls down from Kouten.[35]

During the post-Plan party at the inn, Ku socializes with the others and happily greets Minato. After Musubi descends from Kouten, plowing over Minato in the process, Ku and Minato's other Sekirei show up to share the moment.[36]

Ku appears in the interlude/epilogue, where she plays a key role. She later participates in the battle on Kamikura.

Trivia[]

  • The animal costume that Kusano wears briefly in the anime is a Wagtail. Which is a reference to the Sekirei themselves and the animal the anime was based on.
