Homura is one of the main characters of the story and Minato's sixth Sekirei.

About Homura

Homura is called the 'Sekirei Guardian' as he used to protect unwinged Sekirei until they found their Ashikabi. This mission was given to him by Sahashi Takami. Homura's power, sex, and gender were unstable (a running gag throughout the series prior to him being winged was when he's about to incinerate himself with his own fire, Tsukiumi would suddenly come out of nowhere to douse the engulfing flames[1]); however, he continues to think and act as a man even after his body started becoming female (called 'feminization' in the manga). For a long time, he lived under the alias 'Kagari', a popular host club entertainer (because he was looking for an Ashikabi although no matter how many women he met he did not react[2]) and only Asama Miya, Uzume, Matsu and Kazehana knew his true identity.

Homura began reacting to Minato after he came to the Inn, causing Homura great stress over his potential Ashikabi being a male.[3][4] Near the end of the second stage, he's revealed to be the last unwinged Sekirei.[5] Homura left the Inn to go after the MBI Director in order to bring an end to the Sekirei Plan. However, he was attacked by multiple Sekirei under orders from Mikogami and Higa to capture him. Refusing to be a trophy in Minaka's game, Homura attempted to commit suicide through self-immolation, just as Minato and his Sekirei arrived.[6]

Homura-in-the-lab

Homura's reminiscence after being winged

Unwilling to let Homura sacrifice himself, Minato winged him, saving his life.[7] However, as Minato is a male, Homura begins to grow breasts and develops more feminine traits. His gender however is still undecided, as no full transformation has occurred.[8] Homura has the ability to control and manipulate fire, has a habit of smoking when anxious and is quite powerful, as Tsukiumi speculates him to be the strongest unwinged Sekirei prior to being winged by Minato.[5] Homura means "flame" or "blaze" literally.

Appearance

Homura has two identities. One is Kagari and the other is Homura. As Kagari, he worked at a host club, and was very suave, polite, and well-spoken, as well as apparently being very good at seducing women, as he says to Miya that he has slept with many, in the process of trying to find his Ashikabi.[2] Kagari dresses well and conducts himself in a manner that makes him popular with women, Sekirei and humans alike. As Homura, he calls himself a defender of Sekirei. He wears a long black overcoat with 4 coattails, and a black half-mask to disguise himself. A running gag in the series is the inability for Tsukiumi in particular to see that they are the same person. Many people who see Kagari after they see Homura often think it's him at first, however begin thinking it's a different person right after. Later on in the series, because of his reaction to Minato, he began to change into a woman. He says later on that Minato has the power to actually determine who he is, even changing his mind "into that of an animal".[8] Homura is attractive as both a man and later as a woman in an androgynous manner, is slender, being tall for a woman and average for a man at 173 cm/5'8”, has short ashen grey hair, and dark orange eyes.

Personality

Homura is calm, collected and described by those who know him, like Yasaka as a cool person with a kind and gentle personality. When anxious he has a habit to cope by smoking.[9] He can be, however, very quick-tempered when the subject involves Minaka, as he's aiming to kill him. A good example is when he couldn't resist the temptation to release his anger on Minaka's speaking doll during the third match. Also, when Minaka offers to cure Chiho from her "incurable" disease, Homura immediately rejects the idea because he believes that Minaka must be up to something. This hatred of Minaka seemed to stem from the fact that Minaka plays with the lives of Sekirei, and even after Minato wings him, Homura says that his goal of killing Minaka has not changed. Homura also has issues with his feminine side as he's a man in a woman's body and tries to keep his mind in check for not getting attracted too much to Minato which is hard thanks to Tsukiumi, who tries to discuss with him whether he finds it fun that others get closer to Minato. During his fight against Akitsu he also displays a comical frustration at her lack of modesty.[10]

Out of all of Minato's Sekirei, Homura is usually the calmest of the bunch and doesn't like to participate in things like competitions for Minato. Although he does not openly show it, Homura is protective of Minato like all of his Sekirei and always watches Minato's back, as seen when Uzume tries to steal the Jinki after the third match. Although he is loyal to Minato, the fact that he was winged by a man is still not something that he is comfortable with, at least not until later in the series, which coincides with Homura becoming more comfortable with the relevant bodily changes. By the end of the series, it is evident that Homura is very much in love with Minato, the same as his other Sekirei, and is finally comfortable with that fact.[11] A running gag in the series is that he is always convincing himself that he does not find the affection that Minato's other Sekirei show him to be interesting, despite it being evident that the opposite is true.

Homura is one of Minato's most experienced Sekirei in battle. Out of every Sekirei, other than those who belonged or currently belong to the Disciplinary Squad, he has been in the most battles, often fighting during his role as the Sekirei Guardian. As such, he is usually one of Minato's main advisors in a situation, along with Matsu.

Abilities and Powers

Homurafireball

Homura creates a fireball with the use of his ability

Homura has the ability to create, control and manipulate fire. He has a habit of smoking when anxious and lights his cigarettes with his own power. His name literally means "flame", referring to his element. He can give it the shape of a dragon, a snake, or cause it to appear as just a ball of fire. Before he was winged, he would constantly lose control of his power. Because of this, it almost consumed him a couple times, leaving him in danger. When he was winged by Minato, his powers were at the point where he couldn't control it at all.

Homurawinged

If Minato hadn't winged him, he would have been "self-cremated". He is quite powerful, as Tsukiumi speculates him to be the strongest unwinged Sekirei prior to being winged by Minato.[5] Even when he was melting down and unstable, Homura was able to fend off Akitsu, who he described as too strong to be winged. His chant to remove the opponents Sekirei's crest is "These are the flames of my pledge, burn the karma of my Ashikabi!"

Major Battles

History

A fair amount is known about Homura's past. Kazehana reveals that Homura did not awaken before or during the awakening of The First Disciplinary Squad at the first battle of Kamikura Island. At one point before the Sekirei Plan began he can be seen talking with Takehito Asama and Sahashi Takami about his unique circumstances as a Sekirei (bodily instability and the potential of transformation).[16] It is also known that he worked in a host club in Tokyo and was its number one draw. Presumably prior to his release Takami asked Homura to be the Sekirei Guardian and since then he has protected unwinged Sekirei until they meet their fated one, typically working against Izumi Higa and Hayato Mikogami's Sekirei in the process. It is also revealed by Homura in an extra chapter that he was invited by Miya to live in Izumo Inn as soon as he was released by MBI.

Synopsis

The Door to a New Residence

Homura is first seen when he helps Musubi escape from Hikari and Hibiki. Homura jumps in to stop Hikari and Hibiki from attacking Musubi, while she runs off with Minato. After Musubi becomes Minato's Sekirei and Yukari comes to visit, Minato goes out with his friend Yasaka. While he walks around the city with Yasaka, Homura bumps into them, and introduces himself as Kagari, a host at a night club. After promising to share a drink with Minato the next time they meet, he leaves. Homura is next seen after Minato is kicked out of his apartment. After landing in the garden of Izumo Inn from Musubi's jump, Minato has his wounds treated by Homura, who is actually a resident at Izumo Inn. While Minato is being treated, he recognizes Homura's face but can't recognize it. Homura then reminds Minato of their promise to go drinking together. After Minato leaves, he sees the flyer for vacancy in Izumo Inn and becomes a resident. While Minato and Miya talk about the details, Homura notices the clouds Musubi cleared away and says remarks that it looks like someone just wanted to look at the moon.

The Green Girl

After Minato moves in, Homura welcomes him to Izumo Inn before heading to his job at the night club. Later the other day, Homura is asked by Takami to watch over Kusano at the Botanical Garden. Arriving after Minato and Seo had already gotten through, Homura holds Akitsu back so that Musubi can meet with Minato and save Kusano. After a long and almost meaningless fight, Homura and Akitsu both retreat. After arriving back at Izumo Inn, Homura informs Miya about a new potential resident and reports to Takami that Kusano's sleeping face looked very peaceful.

The Last Sekirei

After Uzume leaves Izumo Inn, Homura's reaction to Minato begins to intensify. On top of that his body begins to change even further, causing his mentality to become more feminine along with the physical changes.

After spending too much time in the bath where he was trying to hide his transformation from Tsukiumi and Musubi, he collapses. Minato, who is nearby. catches him, accidently feeling his chest. Homura, who is still slightly dazed, almost kisses Minato, his reaction getting stronger. However at the last moment, both realize what he's doing and he punches Minato in the face in surprise. While Minato lies on the floor, Homura decides that he can't take a chance with Minato and decides he needs to kill him. When he tries to do it, he finds that his fire won't listen to him and he's unable to kill Minato.

At that moment, Musubi and Tsukiumi arrive, Tsukiumi's water putting out the fire. Homura laughs and says that he won't apologize for hitting Minato, since he was the first man to touch his chest.

When he gets to his room, he decides that he needs to kill Minaka before his already unstable powers get worse. As Homura departs, both Uzume and Akitsu confront him, further worsening his condition, and he is only stabilized after being winged by Minato.[7]

After the battle was over, Minato asked if Homura wants to kill Minaka but he want everyone to go home together which he agrees and became tired out. He woke up two days later with Miya and Minato beside him, Minato was about to change the bandages and saw Homura's breasts. Homura tells him that he/she is different from the other Sekirei and that his gender can be decided by the Ashikabi, Minato was about to put ointment and ask Homura to remains as he/she is right now and tells him/her that he/she is fine the way he/she is now and Homura thanks him.[17]

After Minato requests that Matsu inform him and the others who don't know much/anything about the first invasion of Kamikura Island and other key events regarding the Sekirei, Matsu obliges him and tells the group, Homura included, multiple stories of her past experiences, such as her time as a member of the First Generation Disciplinary Squad, this is later followed by the start of the Third Stage and its matches.[18]

Homura watches the first and second matches of the Third Stage with the others, after which they eat dinner. As Minato conveys to the others his and Musubi's encounter with Nanami and Himura during a meeting in Matsu's room, Homura supports his decision not to help or join them.[19] Along with Tsukiumi and Musubi, Homura is one of the three Sekirei that Minato chooses to accompany him for the third match of the Third Stage against Natsuo and Higa.[20] Tsukiumi combines her powers with Homura when the battle begins to create a steam cloud, and then rushes to defend Minato when Oriha attacks him and Natsuo.[13] [21] Homura also terminates Kujou and fights Benitsubasa. Minato and co. later win the match and are awarded a Jinki by Minaka. Uzume then arrives, restrains Tsukiumi and Musubi and demands the Jinki be handed over to her and thus, to Higa.[22] She is later driven away by the arrival of Hayato, Akitsu, and Mutsu.[23]

As most of Minato's group head out to free Chiho from Higa, Sae, She, and Uzume attack the Inn, drawing Homura's attention and ire, who casually comments that Sai "actually did it." Homura's threats of involving Miya in the fight cause Sai to hesitate in attacking, and the Fire Sekirei offers Sai the chance to retreat, which she rejects, claiming that her master, Izumi Higa, would be angry with her and Shi for failing him. When Homura reveals her name and number, claiming that if she didn't bother to defend the Inn, Miya would be angry at her failure, Sai curses, intimidated by her opponent being a single number. When Minato convinces Uzume to rejoin their side by revealing his group's plan to rescue her Ashikabi, Sai's attention in drawn away from Homura as she furiously demands to know what "Number 10" is doing. When Uzume tells Sai and Shi that she no longer has any reason to work with them or their Ashikabi, and to leave the Inn at once due to Homura and Kazehana vastly outclassing them in power and experience, Sai expresses indignation, and proudly clarifies that as a Sekirei of the "Ashikabi of the East", she has a duty to see the fight and mission through. Sai is informed by her opponent that she'll be going all out, and charges Homura shortly thereafter, slinging her knife whips at the other Sekirei. Homura uses her Sword of Flame technique as Sai gets within range, slicing into Sai's chest and gravely injuring her, as Kazehana similarly defeats Shi with minimal effort.[24] Realizing that a cheap shot on Minato will terminate Kazehana, Homura, and Minato's other Sekirei, allowing for her to get revenge and remain in Higa's good graces, a wounded Sai slings her knives at Minato's back. However, Uzume takes the hit for him by standing between the two. Expressing regret that she failed, Sai falls limp, eliminated from the Plan, as Mianto's party expresses their anguish, and Uzume too, falls to her injuries and is eliminated. Later, Natsuo, Benitsubasa, and Haihane approach the group, presumably to collect the three bodies, although Natsuo only expresses interest in collecting Uzume's when addressing Minato.[25]

Homura is later able to see Miya's shared memories of the past through her bond with Minato, which includes a Sekirei that resembles her.[26]

Back at Maison Izumo during the fourth match (Minato only takes Ku with him to battle, after forming an alliance with Seo and Sanada), Musubi and Tsukiumi sense Ku "getting ahead of them" by further bonding with Minato again; to Homura's amusement. Musubi reminisces about Uzume, which leads her to propose everyone make a profound and unique "Sekirei Expression" regarding their futures with Minato.[27] Later, Higa's Sekirei attack the inn again, leading to Tsukiumi clashing with Ichiya while Homura fights Kaiha, Kazehana-Kaie, and Musubi-Toyotama. However, when Higa orders his Sekirei to fall back because of Mikogami's intervention and Toyotama's termination, the fight does not reach a definitive conclusion.[28] After cleaning up the damage done to the inn with the others, Homura has her Declaration heart-to-heart with Minato.[29]

As the Sekirei and Ashikabi arrive on Kamikura Island, Minaka reveals that the island emits energies toxic/poisonous to Ashikabi. The Ashikabi (and only they) have five minutes to place their Jinki at eight strategic locations on the island's perimeter before they succumb to these energies.[30] Minato (accompanied by Homura, Kazehana, and Kusano while Musubi, Tsukiumi, and Matsu go with Minaka, who is handling the other Jinki possessed by Minato's group (#8) due to having the potential to be an Ashikabi himself) manages to place the Jinki (#3) into its receptacle just as time expires. Once this is complete, massive walls of light separate the participants into assorted pairs: forced to fight each other until there is a winner. If the fights aren't settled in one hour, both the Ashikabi (and all their associated Sekirei) will be terminated. Shortly after this, Homura and the others see that Kaho has been terminated by Karasuba via a holographic projection, before they are confronted by Higa, Kaie, Ichiya, and Kaiha.[31] Homura later fights Kaiha and Ichiya, but neither side terminates the other.[32]

Homura later activates her Norito by kissing Minato and attacks the invading army.[15]

Homura later (following some more fighting and Musubi terminating Karasuba) entrusts Musubi with using some of her power (along with the others) to revive Minato, after which Musubi and Minato defeat Miya on Kouten. The Sekirei then catch Minato when he falls down from Kouten.[33]

After things are over, Homura watches over Yashima and other Sekirei released back after being revived, and shares a moment with Minato. She later takes work at a bar from a former friend made during her days as a host, and reunites with Yasaka, later having Minato visit her at work. She later participates in the battle on Kamikura.
